In a story, I heard Lord Shiva once fought against Lord Krishna for his devotee Banasura and Lord Shiva lost the battle against Lord Krishna , When Naradha asked Lord Krishna How he was able to defeat Lord Shiva lord Krishna said throughout the battle i was chanting the Panchakshara mantra ( Om Nama Shivaya) which helped me to defeat Lord Shiva in other words  Lord shiva helped me to defeat him

Banasura ruled over the kingdom of Sonithapuram, he was the first son of Mahabali he did severe penance on Lord Shiva and got 1000 hands and as a boon lord Shiva with his sons and army accepted to guard the palace of Banasura, with this he became a strong and mighty ruler and extended his kingdom his devotion towards Lord Shiva remain unchanged for some time. as time passed he became blinded by his power, during his prayer he said to Lord Shiva, that he hasn't found anyone who can beat him in a battle and his body is yearning for a good fight, Lord Shiva was angered by his arrogance said soon you will find an enemy who will defeat you and disappeared. Banasura went to his palace and waited for his enemy, he was too confident he won't lose because his palace was guarded by lord shiva himself.

He had a beautiful daughter called Ushai she saw a beautiful man in his dreams and fell in love with him, one of her friends had good knowledge of magic, she immediately found out that the princess is suffering from love and with her power, she painted the image of the man Ushai saw on her dreams, it was Anirudhan the grandson of Lord Krishna and with her magical powers, she brought Anirudhan from Dwaraka to Ushai's room. Ushai was overwhelmed with joy on seeing the man of her dreams.

Anirudhan was stunned by her beauty and fell in love with her and they continued to live happily in her room, the guard and servants were suspicious of a male voice and laughter coming from the princess's room, soon this news reached the Banasura, he barged into his daughter room and saw  Anirudhan in his daughter's room, he ordered the soldiers to throw him in prison but the soldiers were no match for the might of Anirudhan, at last Banasura used a Nagasthra to captivated him and threw him in prison.

Ushai pleaded and begged her father to leave Anirudhan saying she is in love with him and can't live without him, but Banasura ignored his daughter's pleading and went away, meanwhile, in Dwaraka, everyone was searching for Anirudhan at that time the great sage Naratha came to see Lord Krishna and informed him about the whereabouts of Anirudhan soon Lord Krishna reached Sonithapuram with his army.

When Banasura came out of his palace finishing his meditation he saw Karuda flying towards him carrying Lord Krishna. Banasura started shooting arrows at Lord Krishna and the battle started .outside the palace Lord Ganesha was fighting Balram, Lord Karthikeya was fighting Pradyumna, the Yadava army was fighting the army of Lord Shiva and Lord Shiva came to fight Lord Krishna and a fierce battle started all the celestial being gathered to watch the battle between Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna both are equally matched as time goes on the army of Lord Shiva gained an upper hand.

Seeing his army suffering Lord Krishna decided to end the battle soon, He used Mohanasthra on lord Shiva making him unable to move and went to fight with Banasura meanwhile the anger of lord shiva manifested into a three-headed demon and started to attack the Yadhava army and Banasura showered arrows on Lord Krishna with his 1000 hands, Lord Krishna used his celestial weapons to break Banasura's500 bows, Banasura took different weapons in his 1000 hands and started to attack soon Lord Krishna broke al his weapons unable to withstand Lord Krishna's attack Banasura fell on his chariot suddenly the mother of Banasura came into the battlefield and stood in front of Lord Krishna letting her son escape.

Lord Krishna saw his army getting destroyed by the demon manifested by lord shiva's anger, he manifested his own anger and made it fight the demon and went after Banasura finally Lord Krishna used his Suthashana chakra on Banasura cutting his 998 arms.

Banasura fell to the ground and cried in pain, suddenly all the devas appeared in front of Lord Krishna and Lord  Shiva and pleaded to call back the demons manifested by their anger or else they will destroy this whole world. both Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva recalled the demons manifested from their anger then Lord Shiva asked Lord Krishna to forgive Banasura and end this battle Lord Krishna said that he promised not to kill the descendants of  Prakalatha and forgave Banasura.

Then the great Sage Naratha appeared, Banasura fell on the feet of Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva and asked pleaded to forgive his foolish act and promised Lord Krishna about the marriage of Anirudhan and Ushai and everything came to a happy end, when Lord Shiva was getting ready to leave Lord Krishna fell on his feet thanked him and asked for him blessings, Lord Shiva blessed Lord Krishna and the newly married couples and went back to Kailash.

Slowly Naratha came near Lord Krishna and asked how Lord Krishna defeated Mahadeva(Lord Shiva) Krishna smiled and said he didn't defeat Lord Shiva and by Mahadeva's grace he was able to fight equally with him. the sage Naratha became confused with Lord Krishna's reply, understanding this Lord Krishna said Naratha you will soon experience how I was able to fight Lord Shiva and then everyone returned to their places.
