During the gurukul days of Lord Krishna and Balram, there studied a boy named Sudama, he was very fond of Krishna and became his friend after the finishing the gurukul he married a girl called Suseelai and he had many children but the family lived in poverty, there were many days when Sudama, his wife and children spend without any food.

Sudama thought that if he had money he would lose his devotion to Lord Krishna and that is the reason why Krishna hasn't blessed him with any wealth, his wife Suseelai is well-mannered and good-natured woman who managed to take care of the family. One day her younger son cried to her asking for food, no mother can watch her children being hungry, her mind was filled with the thought that if her husband went to see Lord Krishna who was her husband's friend from gurukul they might get some help from him so she insisted Sudama to go and see his old friend Lord Krishna.

Sudama at first refused then agreed to visit lord Krishna and said to his wife that he couldn't go empty-handed to visit his friend, Suseelai got some flattened rice flakes(Poha) from her neighbour and tied them in a piece of cloth and gave it to her husband. Sudama after a long time went to see his friend. he had various thoughts in mind, will Krishna remember him after all these years, what if Krishna doesn't remember him? finally, he reached Lord Krishna's palace and asked the guard to let him to see Krishna but due to his looks, they didn't let him in.

He waited near the gate for some time and when the guards tried to move him from the place he started to shout Hey Krishna!, Hey Krishna! hearing this sound  Lord Krishna ran towards the gate and hugged Sudama, and scolded the guard for not treating his friend properly, the guards apologized to Sudama and Lord Krishna.

Lord Krishna welcomed Sudhama to his palace and introduced him to everyone, Rukmani Devi gave him new clothes and served him food, Sudama was overwhelmed by the love and hospitality he received from Krishna after having food he rested for sometime later that evening  Krishna and Rukmani Devi came to see him, the old friends chatted about the old times, the mischievous act the have done during their gurukul ,  Lord Krishna saw something wrapped in cloth and tied to Sudama's cloth, he asked what is it, without waiting for Sudama's answer he grabbed it and untied the cloth and smiled saying, Sudama you have brought me some delicious Poha(flattened rice flakes), Krishna took a hand full of Poha and ate it, when he tried to take another hand, Rukmani Devi stopped Krishna (The reason Rukmani Devi stopped Lord Krishna from taking another  hand full of Poha was in the first bite  Krishna blessed Sudama with all the wealth in the world making Sudama equal to Kubera in wealth if Krishna blessed Sudama with even more wealth than Kubera it would create trouble for Sudama so Rukmani devi stopped Krishna after taking one hand of Poha).

Sudama stayed at Krishna's palace for three days and then left for his home, on the way Sudama became sad thinking that his wife Suseelai asked him to visit Krishna to get some help but he was ashamed to ask Krishna for help and doesn't know how to console his wife and children, thinking Krishna will show a path he continued his journey towards his home.

But instead of his home, he found a huge palace and saw his wife and children dressed in beautiful clothes and jewellery, Sudhama was overjoyed by his friend Krishna's help, soon the news of poor Sudama became  Kubera spread everywhere, and Sudama gave his immense wealth to everyone who came to him asking for help.

Moral stories in English: The Honest Woodcutter

Many people came to Sudama asking for help by Krishna's blessing the wealth of Sudama never decreased and Lord Kubera the king of yaksha and the guardian of wealth became jealous of Sudama and asked the yakshas to bring all of Sudama's wealth, the yakshas came to Sudama and ordered him to surrender all his wealth as per the boon Kubera got from Lord Shiva no one should have wealth more or equal to him.

Sudama, his wife and children removed all their royal jewels, dresses and wore the dresses which they used to wear when they were poor there wasn't a slight hesitation on their faces with a smiling face they asked the yakshas to take the wealth since the blessing of Krishna is enough for them when the yakshas tried to take Sudama's wealth  Krishna disguised as a young brahmachari and stopped the yakshas.

Sudama stopped the young brahmachari saying Krishna gave us the wealth and now he wishes to take them back so don't stop the yakshas but the young brahmachari was adamant about stopping the yakshas from taking Sudama's wealth and finally, Kubera himself appeared ignoring the young brahmachari's word he started to take the wealth of Sudama, this angered Krishna and he took his Visvaroopa, Kubera fell on Krishna's feet and said forgive me, my Lord.

I was very keen to see your Vishwaroopa and I am well aware that you won't tolerate anyone troubling your devotees so I did this drama, Kubera gave back Sudama's wealth and return to his place with Krishna's blessing.

Lord Krishna  was very much touched by the love of Sudama and his family and gave them a boon Sudama and his family said in unison that Krishna's blessing was enough for them, he blessed them and said when the time you will come and join me in Vaikunta and return to his place
