Kalashtami is observed on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha of every month. By the way, the main Kalashtami falls in the month of Marshish, which is known as Kalabhairav ​​Jayanti.  According to the Shiva Purana, Kaal Bhairav ​​was born on Ashtami Tithi from the part of Lord Shiva, hence Ashtami Tithi is also known as Kalashtami, Kaal Bhairavashtami or Bhairavashtami. It is believed that by worshiping Kaal Bhairav on this day, all the fears and obstacles are removed. Although the main Kalashtami falls in the month of Marshish (The Ninth Month of the Hindu calendar this year on the 16th of December 2022, which is known as Kalabhairav ​​Jayanti), the worshipers of Kalabhairav ​​offer prayers to Kalabhairav ​​on the Ashtami Tithi of every month.




Importance of Kalashtami Vrat

Kaal Bhairav ​​is considered to be the fiercest form of Lord Shiva and he is also the deity of the Tantra Mantra. Bhairav ​​Baba also punishes all the sinners, hence he is also called Dandapani. Lord Bhairav ​​Nath's vahana is a dog, so feeding a dog on this day is considered very virtuous and the devotee gets the desired fruit. Worshiping Kaal Bhairav ​​keeps all the negative forces away and Along with this, one gets freedom from any kind of fear.


Kala Bhairav ​​has eight forms Whenever you go to visit any Shaktipeedam, you definitely find a temple of Kaal Bhairav ​​there. At present, the worship of Kaal Bhairav ​​is prevalent in the form of Batuk Bhairav ​​and Kaal Bhairav, but information about 8 forms of Bhairav ​​has been given in Tantra Sadhana. Their names are Bhishan Bhairav, Chandra Bhairav, Krodha Bhairav, Rudra Bhairav, Asitanga Bhairav, Sanhar Bhairav, Kapali Bhairav ​​and Unmatt Bhairav. Khichdi, rice, jaggery etc. are offered to Bhairav ​​Baba. By fasting on Kalashtami, it helps in getting rid of all sorrows, diseases and enemies.


How to perform Kalashmtami Vrat

On this day wake up before sunrise and take bath etc. After that wear clean clothes. After that worship Bhairav Dev. In the worship of this day, mainly offer the ashes brought from the cremation ground to Bhairav Dev. A black dog is considered to be the vehicle of Bhairav Dev, in this case worship a black dog along with Bhairav Dev on the day of Kalashtami. Listen to the story of KaalBhairav after worship. 

On this day, especially chanting of Kaal Bhairav's mantra "Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah" is also considered fruitful. Donating to the poor on this day gives virtue. On the day of Kalashtami, go to the temple and light an oil lamp in front of Kalabhairav.

What to do and what not to do on Kalashtami

1. The special importance of worshiping Lord Shiva on the day of Kalashtami has been told. By doing this the person gets the blessings of Lord Bhairav.

2. Donation of vermilion, mustard oil, coconut, gram etc should be done in Bhairav temple on the day of Kalashtami.

3. On the day of Kala Ashtami, light a mustard oil lamp in front of the picture or statue of Bhairav Devta and recite Shri Kaal Bhairav Ashtak.

4. Feed sweet bread to the dog which is considered the vahana or vehicle of Kaal Bhairav on the day of Kalashtami.

5. Do not torture dogs even by mistake on the day of Kalashtami.

Classical Significance of Kalashtami

According to Hindu mythology, Kaal Bhairav is considered to be the Rudra incarnation of Lord Shiva. Devotees observe Kalashtami fast to get rid of their anger, greed, and other addictions. Kaal Bhairav is believed to bless his devotees with good health, wealth, prosperity, and spirituality. Kaal Bhairav is also known as Kshetrapal, the protector of all temples. It is believed that for those who worship Lord Kaal Bhairav with full devotion, the Lord protects them from evil and darkness.

Story behind Kalashtami 

It is believed that Bhairav Dev was born due to the anger of Lord Shiva. According to a popular legend behind this, 'Once upon a time when Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar, the three murthis had a debate about who is the most worshipable among them? Thinking that there should be some conclusion to this dispute, he called the gods of heaven to solve this debate and asked them to decide this matter. Meanwhile, there was an argument between Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma. In this debate, ShivA got so angry that he took a fierce form. It is believed that Bhairav Dev was born in that fiery form.
